Bang, bang…duck or run…
A masked madman with a gun…
Shooting, shouting…
Crying, screaming…
Death and mayhem…
Just another day in the good old US of A…

It has become normal in the USA. Even the amount of shootings in a year, even the seriousness of the shootings, even number of victims, even the targeted age group doesn’t change anything. THIS ISN’T NORMAL IN THE NETHERLANDS!

I am aware that it is routine here…this post was written with utter sarcasm and deep sadness.

Yes, I did understand your intention, and I agree with your plea!!
That there are Americans, like you, that still feel the abnormality of it all gives hope

Oh…I believe most Americans do think it’s abnormal…even true gun enthusiasts don’t like meaningless violence…it’s not good for their cause which is all tied to our 2nd amendment rights. You see…the gun issue in the country is complicated. It is directly tied to our idea of freedom and what it means to us as a nation because the right be bear arms is part of our constitution. When our nation was founded all those years ago, life was much different than it is today and I am quite sure our founding fathers could never have anticipated a future for their nation like this. The gun control issue too, no matter what side you come down on it, is a political one as well. There is a lot of political money raised in the name of gun ownership. So, there aren’t easy answers as people tend to be messy. I hate the violence. I’d like to see us try to actually do something constructive about it and the sooner the better.

Yes, I know the deep felt sentiments of Americans about the second Amendement. I agree with your view on the matter.

Sarcasm aside, I disagree that it’s routine or the norm, but it’s disturbing how frequently it’s happening. I think that if it wasn’t guns it would be bombs such as was used a while back in Oklahoma. The most concerning thing for me is how our society seems to make it ok for people to look down on others and think they are not worthy to share in this life. It also makes those who have been persecuted feel like they have been told they are not worthy of life and therefore they fight back taking other lives as well as their own. What ever happened to “we the people”? What ever happened to the idea of a “perfect union” where people respect each other’s right to a productive and safe life? What is wrong with people today? It makes me very sad!

As always Betty…a very interesting and insightful perspective. I guess I don’t think it is routine here either but WAY too common an occurence. It is such a complicated issue too…there aren’t easy solutions but I would l like to see us at least try to tackle it so we can work toward a more tolerant and peaceful society.
